The Sumter Junior Welfare League’s placement at Crosswell Home for Children provides members with meaningful opportunities to build relationships with the children through birthday celebrations, seasonal events, and hands-on support. From assisting with major milestones like the 90th anniversary celebration to serving at holiday events, volunteers consistently demonstrate compassion, teamwork, and a deep commitment to making each child feel valued and celebrated.

The Saving Sumter Strays placement allows members to actively support animal rescue efforts by helping socialize dogs, assist with care and transport, and promote adoption opportunities. In addition to hands-on volunteering, the team supports fundraising initiatives and encourages others in the community to get involved, whether by walking dogs or welcoming a new pet into their home.

Since 1962, Solomon’s Home has provided a warm and loving assisted living community in Sumter, and this placement allows League members to build meaningful relationships with its residents through monthly visits and social gatherings. From hosting wine and cheese events to bringing along children and family to brighten residents’ days, the team finds this placement deeply rewarding and looks forward to continuing their joyful service together.

The League’s placement with Sumter United Ministries allows members to support the organization through donor appreciation efforts, seasonal projects like the Christmas Angel Tree, and hands-on participation in community events such as Oktoberfest. In addition to volunteering their time, the team helps raise awareness of ongoing food pantry needs, proudly partnering to provide meaningful support to individuals and families in the Sumter community.

PLACEMENTS​​​​​​

The Fundraising Committee supports the League’s mission by planning dynamic, community-centered events that directly fund our grant program and local nonprofit partnerships. Through signature initiatives like “Deck the Doors” and Mahjong tournaments the committee creates memorable experiences while making a meaningful financial impact across the Sumter community.

The Hospitality Committee enhances the League experience by planning and hosting meaningful gatherings throughout the year that foster connection and celebration. From the October Tea honoring Provisionals to the May Dinner recognizing members transitioning to Sustainer status—along with thoughtful touches at general meetings—the committee creates warm, welcoming moments that strengthen fellowship within the League.

The Two by Two placement supports both the Durant Children’s Center and the Advocacy Pregnancy and Parenting Center by providing hands-on service to children and families in the Sumter community. Through thoughtful acts such as organizing donations, supporting special events, preparing meals for new mothers, and creating seasonal displays and treat bags for children, the committee works collaboratively to encourage and uplift those they serve.

The Puppets Placement brings the beloved Sumter County Jubilee to life each year, continuing a 47-year tradition of entertaining and educating generations of local third graders through laughter, creativity, and community spirit. Through rehearsals, performances, and teamwork, members deliver a magical experience that not only delights young audiences but also strengthens camaraderie within the League.

The Sumter Junior Welfare League highlights The Wishing Well as a hands-on placement where members directly support the League’s mission through retail operations and service to the community. In addition to managing daily operations and merchandise selection, the team coordinates scheduling, oversees financial management, and maintains detailed bookkeeping practices to ensure the shop runs efficiently and continues to benefit the League and local hospital community.

The Sumter Arts Placement supports the Sumter Opera House, Sumter County Gallery of Art, and Sumter Little Theatre by providing volunteers for performances, gallery events, youth programs, and community festivals throughout the year. Members have the opportunity to serve behind the scenes, ushering guests, assisting with art camps and classes, and supporting special events while also enjoying the vibrant arts culture that enriches the Sumter community.

The League Attorney serves as a trusted advisor, providing legal guidance and oversight to ensure the organization operates in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This role supports the Board and membership by reviewing contracts, offering counsel on governance matters, and helping protect the integrity and longevity of the League.
